The worldwide tyre manufacturer's commitment towards more sustainable mobility is undeniable: at Movin'On 2021, Michelin's ecological plans are introduced by two projects.
The Movin'On is a world summit about sustainable mobility, where innovative plans can be exhibited. In the 2021 edition, Michelin presented two projects that are part of an ambitious strategy: from 2021 to 2050 the company will focus on sustainable goals.
"The two innovative solutions we are presenting at this year’s global sustainable mobility summit offer tangible, real-world proof of our determination to make mobility increasingly sustainable" commented Florent Menegaux, CEO Michelin.
WISAMO project for more sustainable sea mobility
The first project is the "Wing Sail Mobility": an automated, telescopic and inflatable sail that employs the wind driving force. The system was developed by Michelin's R&D department and two Swiss inventors who share the Group's "all-sustainable" vision. The wing can be positioned on private or merchant vessels as first equipment or mounted on existing transports.
The sail can be hoisted if necessary and helps to reduce fuel consumption - lowering CO2 levels. Thanks to the collaboration with the famous skipper and project ambassador, Michel Desjoyaux, the first WISAMO system will be employed on a boat in 2022.
The sustainable materials track tyre
Michelin second project consists of a track tyre that contains 46% sustainable materials, fitted to the GreenGT Mission H24 hydrogen-powered prototype developed for endurance racing. The eco-friendly tyre can guarantee high-performance thanks to:
- The employment of natural rubber;
- Coal's recovery from end-of-life tyres;
- The use of lemon or orange peel, pine resin, sunflower oil and aluminium recovered from used cans.
