When it comes to plastic waste, bathrooms are full of products sheathed in plastic: moisturizer, shampoo, razor, toothbrush, and so on. However, our care does not have to contribute to plastic pollution at all (and any more).

As consumers, we hold tremendous collective power to shift demand and influence the types of products that companies produce. Have you ever heard of “microplastics”? Since their appearance in cosmetics 50 years ago, microplastics have become widespread in cosmetic and personal care formulations. Microplastics are employed in products we make use of every day, such as detergents (to encapsulate the fragrance), fabric softeners (to make a nice scent to last for a longer time), ink and printing applications (such as binders and pigment extenders), cosmetic products, medicines and food complements to hide the bad taste of active substances and many other applications of them. Therefore, why not buying plastic-free products?

In addition to being more environmental-friendly, many plastic-free products are longer lasting and more cost-effective in the long run. For instance, a Climate Conscious’s article states that a $25 safety razor breaks even with a standard plastic razor within a year. At that point, blade replacements for the safety razor save roughly 75% annually over the plastic version. Plus, the stainless-steel safety razor can last a lifetime.

Plastic-free personal care lineup

There are plenty of plastic-free personal care products out there. Here’s a Climate Conscious’s list of some replacements:

• Shampoo and conditioner bars. If you still prefer liquid haircare, some companies sell shampoo and conditioner concentrates that can be added to boiling water and poured into a reused plastic bottle;
• Bamboo toothbrushes: except for being made with compostable and recyclable materials, they are no different from their plastic counterpart;
• Refillable lotion container. For body moisturizer, Climate Conscious suggests a product that comes in an aluminium bottle that can be sent back to the supplier for a refill or bottle reuse;
• Deodorant bars.

Where to find these products

Most organic and natural grocery stores sell shampoo and conditioner bars, bamboo toothbrushes, and other plastic-free personal care products. Some items are easier to find online instead. One of the most popular online vendors is the Package Free Shop, which offers a wide selection of plastic-free products. However, one of the best things you can do is support local businesses that stock these products. Some even offer onsite refill services for personal care, cleaning, and laundry products that save on shipping costs.
