To protect the forests at all costs: 2021 World Wildlife Day Film Showcase winners

The Winners of the 2021 World Wildlife Day Film Showcase were shown during the virtual World Wildlife Day Celebration at UN Headquarters.

On March 3rd, the CITES Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), announced the winners of the 2021 World Wildlife Day Film Showcase under the theme “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet.”

The 11 winning films were shown during the virtual event marking the World Wildlife Day celebrations on March 3rd. According to the official showcase website “This year's World Wildlife Day Showcase includes films spreading the message that the forests are pillars of humanity’s social and economic well-being, as well as key elements of the planet’s environmental health and biological diversity”.

CITES Secretary-General Ivonne Higuero said: "The laureates of this year’s Film Showcase have provided us with a deep insight into the profound relationship between people around the world and forests, forest ecosystem services and forest species. By recording the stories and experiences of people involved in all manner of efforts to preserve their forest-based livelihoods and to conserve endangered forested areas and wildlife, our outstanding laureates will help inspire our own work and that of all stakeholders involved to steer our relationship with nature towards sustainability.”

2021 movies’ five categories are:

  • People & Forests (sponsored by National Geographic)
  • My Forest (sponsored by Fable & Mane)
  • Future of Forests (sponsored by San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance)
  • Living Forests (sponsored by HHMI Tangled Bank Studios)
  • Forest Micro Movie (sponsored by WaterBear Network)

The UN World Wildlife Day Film Showcase films are available for a free streamed screening here, ready to celebrate the International Day of Forests on March 21st! 2021 theme of the Day of Forests is "Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being".

The restoration and sustainable management of forests help address climate change and biodiversity crises. It also produces goods and services for sustainable development, fostering an economic activity that creates jobs and improves lives. This year’s theme fits into the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a call for the protection and revival of ecosystems around the world.
