"Burn Less, Burn Clean" is the new DHL's strategy. The global-shipping company wants to drive a significant change for sustainable maritime transport.

The proposal is launched by DHL Global Forwarding, the leading air and sea transport company of Deutsche Post DH Group. Every year, European maritime transport releases 140 million tonnes of CO₂. The project, called DHL GoGreen puts at the centre the care for the environment, aiming at reducing the 30% of CO₂ within 2050. "As a global logistics company, aligned with Mission 2050 - Zero Emissions of the Deutsche Post DHL Group, DHL Global Forwarding is committed to guiding the transition to clean and sustainable maritime transport. LCL shipments will offset CO₂ emissions using maritime biofuels and using existing and new partnerships," said Mario Zini CEO of DHL Global Forwarding Italia.

From January 1st, 2021, all LCL-Less than Container Load sea shipments, i.e. "partial-load containers" will be provided for the use of biofuels. Shipments will respect a zero-impact service, at no extra cost, and heavy fuel will gradually be abandoned in favour of sustainable marine biofuels to limit CO₂ emissions.

Burn Less, Burn Clean is the key phrase of DHL's plan: not only the reduction of energy consumption and the increase of renewable fuels but also transport optimisation. In this way, subcontractors are encouraged to buy low-emission vehicles and employees will accept a more sustainable approach. The GoGreen project also invests initiatives locally and in Italy, the project includes the planting of 2,500 larches and fir trees in the Val di Zoldo to rebuild the forests destroyed by the VAIA storm in 2018.

Tim Scharwath, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding-Freight, said that "To fight the climate change, the transportation sector needs a real transformation, starting from the neutralisation of emissions. Sustainable fuels are the alternative to decarbonise the maritime transport service; for this reason, we have decided to limit the emissions of all our LCL shipments. Although we are experiencing an unprecedented period due to the ongoing pandemic, we must ensure that environmental protection and efforts to achieve sustainability are considered a priority."
